Statement

Through mate­r­ial explo­ration and the empha­sis of cir­cum­stan­tial phe­nom­ena his works often play with the tip­ping point of famil­iar­ity. He com­pares traces of decay and growth and is intrigued by their resem­blance, so the end of a prod­uct often trig­gers a process and even his own cre­ations move in a con­stant state of recy­cling. Found objects and mate­ri­als are ana­lyzed and trans­formed based on their char­ac­ter­is­tics, cre­at­ing a dis­tance from their orig­i­nal func­tion and invit­ing the viewer to ques­tion the per­cep­tion and rela­tion towards it.

Driven by curios­ity the work­ing process is exe­cuted in an intu­itive manner, work­ing partly de- and con­struc­tive. Being in con­trol but leav­ing space for coin­ci­dences to occur imple­ments the ele­ment of chance, express­ing a feel­ing of unpre­dictabil­ity and uncer­tainty.

While being fas­ci­nated by organic struc­tures and processes, but also con­fronted with the man-made ones, most of his play­ful exper­i­ments result in a jux­ta­po­si­tion of nature and indus­try, high­light­ing their effects on each other.

    A site-spe­cific instal­la­tion which sac­ri­fices past art­works in order to create a new one. Fin­ished cre­ations were taken back into the mate­r­ial stage and trans­formed into a scenery resem­bling the one of a land­fill. A diverse range of prod­ucts, strange in their own appear­ance but par­tic­u­larly in this con­stel­la­tion are united in the form of a pile, which merges sep­a­rate enti­ties and forms a sense between them.

    During the 24 hours in the res­i­dency organic and domes­tic mate­ri­als were gath­ered. While the nat­ural ones were found in the nearby forest, inhab­i­tants were invited to bring waste prod­ucts which were meant to be dis­carded anyway. The selec­tion of goods and the given time frame set a cer­tain limit phys­i­cally but also inspi­ra­tionally. By con­fronting the accu­mu­lated matter asso­ci­a­tions were made in order to trans­form the known into some­thing fur­ther away from func­tion­al­ity and famil­iar­ity.

    A tent con­tain­ing two matresses entirely made out of con­crete.

    Loop / Pool at SIGN, Groningen; dimensions: Variable; materials: concrete (original: steel bowl, trash).

    Molds of a small trash­bowl are cre­ated con­sis­tently over weeks and casted in con­crete. The orig­i­nal form and use of material/​technique remains con­stant in this process, but the results differ not­i­ca­bly. The vari­a­tions of con­tent shape the final out­come equally as the work­ing atti­tude and con­di­tion while cre­at­ing each indi­vid­ual sculp­ture.

    Loop / Pool at SIGN, Groningen; dimensions: 40 × 65 × 40 cm; materials: terrarium, light tube, towel, urine, agar-agar, sandwich bags.

    In a repi­ti­tion-inspired group show urine gets col­lected by sev­eral par­tic­i­pants. Each con­tainer got trans­formed into a solid state using agar-agar and refilled in sand­wich­bags or left with­out pack­ag­ing. During the time of the exhi­bi­tion vis­i­tors could observe the decay of the human waste.

    The largest tree in a public park gets logged, there­fore enabling sur­round­ing flora to ben­e­fit from the addi­tional light in­cidence. In order to visu­al­ize this par­tic­u­lar cor­re­la­tion the tree log got coated with photo­sensitive Kalli­type emul­sion. Ele­ments of nearby plants were arranged in a 360° angle and ex­posed with the first rays of sun­rise.
