Statement

In my practice there are no fixed rules or restrictions. I highly value authenticity so I adapt to each situation I am confronted with.
I feel that I restrain my creativity while following a calculated plan, while there is a broad idea the final outcome shapes itself during the working process.
Curiosity and intuition guide me to explore new media and techniques with a playful approach on material research.

Due to my strong affection to sculpture and analogue photography but also an open mind for new challenges I constantly discover new fields of interest.
Many of my previous works show a focus on natural processes and structures juxtaposed with industrial elements. But also the dubiousness of mankind finds its way back into my practice through absurdity and humor.

I like to unite my products in interdisciplinary installations, where being in control and creating a setting for the occurrence of chance both affect the artwork.

Souvenirs

  • Souvenirs,

New Wor(l)ds - Souvenirs, Duo-Show with Rudy Simon. Kunstenlab, Deventer; Site-specific installation; materials: mixed media.

To be seen is an installation which combines a selection of older works with materials found in rural Western Australia and Deventer.

Sinnentleerung / Pile

  • Sinnentleerung / Pile,

Headliners Graduation Show, Suikerunie, Groningen; Site-specific installation; materials: mixed media.

A site-specific installation which sacrifices past artworks in order to create a new one. Finished creations were taken back into the material stage and transformed into a scenery resembling the one of a landfill. A diverse range of products, strange in their own appearance but particularly in this constellation are united in the form of a pile, which merges separate entities and forms a sense between them.

24 hours

  • 24 hours,

Site-specific installation; Kunsthuis SYB, Beetsterzwaag; materials: mixed media.

    Collaboration with Sophia Löwe.
During the 24 hours in the residency organic and domestic materials were gathered. While the natural ones were found in the nearby forest, inhabitants were invited to bring waste products which were meant to be discarded anyway. The selection of goods and the given time frame set a certain limit physically but also inspirationally. By confronting the accumulated matter associations were made in order to transform the known into something further away from functionality and familiarity.

Archive

  • Tent,

TENTS at Machinefabriek RAW, Groningen; dimensions: 2.5 × 1.5 × 2.5m; materials: concrete, textile, tent.

  • Pile,

Loop / Pool at SIGN, Groningen; dimensions: Variable; materials: concrete (original: steel bowl, trash).

Molds of a small trashbowl are created consistently over weeks and casted in concrete. The original form and use of material/technique remains constant in this process, but the results differ noticably. The variations of content shape the final outcome equally as the working attitude and condition while creating each individual sculpture.

Each container got transformed into a solid state using agar-agar and refilled in sandwichbags or left without packaging. In order to visualize this particular correlation the tree log got coated with photosensitive Kallitype emulsion.
